The Cans Festival

Posted by Chris on May 7th, 2008

poster.jpgStencil artists converged on London’s Leake Street for the Cans Festival, a street party of stencil art, which ran for only 3 days over the bank holiday weekend. I went along to have a butchers and I have to say it was definitely worth the 40mins queuing in the rain to see.

Artists featured were Bsas Stencil, Run Don’t Walk, James Dodd, Tom Civil, Vexta, Prism, Daniel Meli, Altocontraste, Bandit, Roadsworth, 3D Del Naja, Artiste-Ouvrier, Blek, Sten, Sadhu, C215, Lucamaleonte, Lex, Orticancvoodles, kaagman, Dolk, ccPobel, M-City, Vhils, Btoy, Coolture, Schhh, Borbo, Sam3, Faile, Eine, John Grider, Logan Hicks, Pure Evil, Dot Masters, Dan, Eelus and of course Banksy.

I took some pics and here are some of my favorites.

Nepal & Everest Base Camp March’08

This photo paint a good picture of my trip to the Nepal Himalaya and Everest Base Camp. But the smile is forced and cover the tiredness and ever decreasing amount of oxygen getting to my brain!

In truth I really enjoyed the trip it opened my eyes to so many new experiences but it was really tough going and being at altitude made it harder.

There were moments when I seriously thought ‘why the fuck am i doing this’ Especially moments like:

  • getting out of your warm clothes and into a freezing cold sleeping bag at night
  • being kept awake at night by your heart thumping so hard it feels like it going to burst through your chest
  • the frozen swat toilets
  • getting up in the middle of the night and out of my warm sleeping bag to go use the frozen swat toilets
  • the bland food
  • temperatures at night that would freeze my water bottles
  • the dust while walking the trails
  • body wipe washes that don’t really stop your feet from smelling

All of these were endured for two weeks and all, though clearly not forgotten, are slowly reducing in severity over time. I really do now look at the pictures and remember the trip fondly and without a shred of loathing or regret!

Funny how time changes your perception of things.

Going home

Posted by Chris on February 20th, 2008

For just over three years now New Zealand has been my home but I kinda knew a day would come when I would leave. So when a unique career opportunity arose early this year I knew it was time.

I’m really sad to be leaving both TribalDDB and New Zealand but I am equally excited about going back to London and working at Saatchi & Saatchi.

I owe a lot to the people I have met and the experiences this country has afforded me but its now time to test myself a little further.

Its no doubt going to be an exciting time.

Jonathan Harris @ TED

Posted by Chris on January 29th, 2008

I been following Jonathan Harris’ amazing works for some time and more recently Whale Hunt. This is his speech at TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design conference) 2007 where he presented We Feel Fine, the project that scours blogs to collect the planet’s emotions, and the Yahoo! Time Capsule, which preserves images, quotes and thoughts snapped up in 2006. He also premiered Universe, a tag cloud of our collective consciousness which is now live.

Tribal DDB - Global Agency of the Year

Posted by Chris on January 21st, 2008

untitled4.gifWe just found out today that Advertising Age has named Tribal DDB Worldwide its 2008 Global Agency Network of the Year. Which is nice.

Its interesting as this is the first time an interactive agency has ever won this award and perhaps symbolising where so much of the growth in the ad business is: online.

untitled-2.jpgIts that time of year where everyone tries to kid themselves into a new year resolution. But I’ve no intention of giving up beer or start training for a marathon but I decided to do something a lot easier. Keep a visual log. Why? No reason really other than I’ve been meaning to do a personal project for a while. Flickr aside, I have decided to use a free and simple blog site. tumblr.com

So what’s the subject?

My Weekends.

Weekends are so important. They allow you to de-stress from the previous weekday’s events and recharge for the next. My partner and I always try an do something or go somewhere different just to get away from the stresses of the workday week. Whether biking or walking in the Waitakeres, surfing on the west coast or relaxing on the east coast I’m going to keep a photographic log of all my activities for the 104 most vauable days of the week. I hope it’ll make interesting viewing in the weeks to come.

Cadbury Continental Chocolate wanted to give away 1000 boxes of chocolate. They also wanted to position themselves as an appropriate gift idea for any occasion. Killing two birds with one premium dark chocolate assortment,we created the ‘Celebrate Everything’ microsite – an irreverent place of everyday gift giving. Here, visitors can send virtual boxes of chocolates and personalised e-card messages of celebration, while also being able to read other sent messages from past visitors. Recipients automatically go into the draw to win a real box of Continental, while the sender gets a big warm fuzzy feeling.
